Total tram upgrade and spanish supplier

The project to acquire new trams started in 2015. Parallel to finding the best supplier, the tram tracks and maintenance bases were upgraded – to best accommodate the new vehicles on arrival. Spanish CAF was chosen as the supplier, and the tram was named SL18 - after the year the contract was signed. Similar trams are currently operating in cities like Birmingham, Edinburgh, Budapest, and Freiburg.

Modern Technology

The SL18 isa modern, universally designed low-floor tram with technology that allows for maintenance to be performed in a new and more efficient way. Withself-diagnostic systems, the tram keeps maintenance personnel updated about faults and the need for inspections. Additionally, the tram has a higher passenger capacity than the current rolling stock. The SL18 went into service in 2022, and by the end of 2024, 87 new trams are expected to be operational in the capital.

Engaged Expertise

In the project, Jotne Mobility focused on ensuring good quality in offer evaluation and negotiations, and effective collaboration with all professional groups at Sporveien in this work. Throughout the design, production, and testing phases, it was important to closely monitor all technical systems and ensure a solid maintenance regime with comprehensive foundational documentation. Before the received trams were put into operation in Oslo, Jotne Mobility contributed with technical advice, clarifications around interfaces with the infrastructure, and facilitation for the transfer of the project to Sporveien’s line organization.
